Development of a referral program for BARMER

In mid-2024, BARMER Krankenkasse introduced a flexible customer referral program developed by us. Customers and non-customers can receive non-cash rewards through referrals or use the cash-out option. The program impresses with its transparency, flexibility and high performance.

Project shortcuts

Referrals are a key sales channel for BARMER Krankenversicherung. However, the previous solutions were inadequate: the rewards were limited to cash bonuses and a few vouchers, while the referral website was not very flexible and did not fully comply with BARMER's corporate identity (CI). In addition, there was a lack of transparency and control over the data, and the performance of the old system left a lot to be desired. Our task was therefore to develop and successfully implement a tailor-made, modern customer referral program.

Key new features of the program

The new program includes numerous improvements and innovations:

  • Incentivize each referral with 25.00 euros (equivalent to 2,500 points)
  • Individual rewards store with a selection of non-cash rewards and a cashout option
  • Automated cashout function via finAPI, including IBAN validity check
  • APIs for confirming recommendations and reporting all transactions back to BARMER
  • Comprehensive reporting and manual administration functions for individual adjustments
  • Manual input options for handwritten recommendation forms

An important aspect of the project was compliance with the strict legal requirements to which BARMER is subject as a health insurance company. In addition, a secure, automated cash payout process was developed that enables simple and secure payouts via finAPI. An interface for BARMER employees enables the independent generation of referral codes and the creation of participant accounts.

The referral program helps to attract new customers in a targeted manner and at the same time to promote the loyalty of existing customers by recognizing and rewarding their recommendations.
