Project shortcuts

The Lower Saxony Foundation operates several websites in the Magnolia content management system in version 5.x. This version will soon no longer be supported by the manufacturer. This version will soon no longer be supported by the manufacturer. The three websites were therefore completely relaunched on Magnolia 6.2. The websites went online at the beginning of December 2023 and boast a modern and responsive design. The editors were also taken into account - the individual modules are easy to maintain and can be used flexibly.

Implementation

  • Analysis

The first step was to check how much effort would be required to update to the next Magnolia version and whether it would be worth switching to a different CMS. However, an in-depth analysis of the service and the previous Magnolia implementation showed that Magnolia was still the most suitable system. The relaunch to version 6.2 was therefore planned.

  • Conception & development

From March 2023, the conception and development of the design was carried out with the Community Edition of Magnolia. As this was not the Enterprise Edition of Magnolia, functionalities such as the multisite function had to be developed independently and implemented in a cost-efficient manner. In addition, the front-end development framework "Frontwerk" and the "enhanced Author Experience" (eAX) were used.

  • Accessibility

Accessibility was taken into account in the design: text is available in plain language, font sizes can be adjusted and the websites can be operated using a keyboard. This enables everyone to access the information provided.

Advantages of eAX

  • Optimized content interface for editors
  • "Editorial playground": Authors can find out about new formats and editorial structures and try them out.
  • Traffic light function: The editing status of the content can be seen at a glance. Authors get a quick overview of their workload.

In addition, the CMS offers quick access to particularly important and frequently requested functions as well as the deactivation of unwanted functions.
